Story #131

One time this happened...

New Year's fireworks exploded over Manhattan, but our apartment party had devolved into a lukewarm dance-off with the neighbor playing disco on repeat through the wall. It was exactly 5AM on January first; my family had given up on countdown excitement three hours earlier. As I stared intensely at a lukewarm slice of pizza, my aunt's shrill laughter echoed from the living room. My siblings and I had been competing to see who could hold a silent stare long enough at my mom's half-hearted attempt at a NYE sparkler setup.
